the whole family had gone to bed after a long stressful day of moving house, a door that is normally locked shut was accidentally left open and the dogs wondered into the living quarters where they were NOT normally allowed and they found their way to the child's bedroom and took her from her cot.
Don't blame the parents in this situation. By the time they or any of the other people staying in their house heard any noise at all it was over. This is a terrible tragedy and in no way should their parenting skills be up for questioning.

This is a truly tragic situation and there are only loosers all round. What does seem to be emerging is that, allegedly, the dogs were being kept and used as guard dogs, the breed is imaterial. There are strict laws relating to guard dogs basically that they should be secured and or have a competent handler with them at all times. Perhaps it is time for all those house holders who have a dog and who put a notice or picture on their gate proclaiming 'guard dog', or 'Go on - break in and make his day' to realise what they are saying and perhaps letting them selves in for. If their dog now goes on to attack someone they may well have put themselves voluntarily into the situation of having failed to compy with the rules for guard dogs and can no longer claim to be merely keeping a family pet..

Very sad, no young child should be left alone with dog nor a large dog in the hands of people who cannot train them. My neighbor has a pair of English mastiffs they are obedience trained and never in the yard with out the owners present, ever. I have not heard this story yet ,it is awful there will no doubt be a ban on rotties now because of the bad judgment of humans. How very sad there is no happy ending to these stories no winners.

The parents were looking after the pub and didn't actually leave the child with the dogs. The dogs were supposed to be outside but got in and took the baby outside kiling it.They have been dubbed such a name as this is unusual for the dogs to have done this. That's what i read.

you have a point. this question can be answered two ways
1) the parents should never leave a small child unattended with any dog and certainly not in a public place
2) vicious guard dogs should not be free to wander in a public domain.
not all rotties are vicious and many places these days do need guarding.. bloody awful thing to happen for all concerned.

i have a few points to make about this one not all rottweillers are visious they are renowned as children lovers and second all animals are dangerous you cant compeletely trust a dog cause all dogs have teeth and power behind them my dog i dont think would ever hurt my baby girl but i still would never leave her alone with my daughter as i do not have 100% confidence my thoughts are with the family for all the heartache they have been through for the last few days

Hear you loud and clear,I have Rottweiler dog for 13 years and she died with Cancer last year. When my dog came to us she was 6 months old and the dog's owner made us promised to take care the dog.We paid him $700 for the pure Rottweiler dog and the training for 2 months. My husband bought the stack of Rottweiler 's books to read.Everyone were told how to treat our Rottweiler. We never had any trouble with her. Because,we never take the dog for grant and left our baby with the dog alone. My Rottweiler never attack or kill any children who came to visit my home.My son was 1 years old when the dog came to our lives. Now I am angry that the Rottweiler has a bad name because,People do not respect others, and take time to raise a dog and children. It is our social and responsibility to do our job right. My rottweiler was love among my 3 children as well as 10 of their friends who came to this house day in day out. It is very sad to hear tragic stories, and thank you for asking this question. It really touches my heart and soul for talking about my Rottweiler.

They are only calling them guard dogs because they killed the baby. As everyone knows, dog owners just love these dangerous dogs and will defend them even after they have bitten someone. It is never the dogs fault. They are too thick to realise that these are really semi trained wild animals. Sadly it takes a situation like this to jolt them. But they always go out and buy another wild dog. Its sad.

thought this myself
its a real tragedy this has happened the child should have been supervised at all times if there were dogs about, and even without the dogs the baby shouldn't be on its own

it is an absolute tragedy, rottweilers are normal quiet placid,i think they saw the baby as some thing like a doll. to play with pulling it to bits. its not the dogs fault but the owners. the dogs paid the penalty but the owners haven't. lessons to be learned do not have big dogs near children
