OK I have an '83 380SEC (the coupe) and I can tell you that idle problems are common on these - mine cold idles fairly fast and hot idles quite slow. There is an idle speed control module that may need looking at. Another possibility is in the air intake. Suggest you look at Mercedes specific websites where you will find too much information.

That car uses a computer controlled idle valve, so before you do anything you need to know if either is bad. Does the car idle at the same speed all the time? If yes then maybe the idle needs to be reset. If the idle changes from high to low then you need to see what is causing it. Is it a bad sensor? Bad valve? Bad control unit? Since most of the parts are not cheap I would take it to a MB shop and have them check it.

Sounds like a vaccum leak. Check all of your vaccum lines and replace any that are hard or cracked...probably all of them. One at a time, please. The fumes from the unleaded fuel tends to dry rot rubber. It's common. If the car starts to miss or loose power and has good vaccum lines, the next step is to put on the intake/exhaust gasket. That should fix it. Good luck.
