The trig functions like sin, cos and tan are circular functions; there are obvious connections with a circle. Here are some hyperbolic functions;
sinh x=(1/2)(e^x -e^-x)
cosh x=(1/2)(e^x+e^-x)
tanh x = sinh x/cosh x.
Their uses are as solutions to various integration problems.
If you hang a chain loosely in a U shape it looks like the graph of y=cosh x. It's called a catenary from the Latin for chain.
If you push a pendulum at a frequency different from its resonant frequency, the amplitude of the swings builds up in a shape like y= tanh x.

It is one less than two hyperbolic functions.

But seriously, a hyperbolic function mathematically describes a hyperbolic conic section in profile or surface form. It has a shallower sag than a parabolic function, also a conic section.

x^2 - y^2 = 25 has a hyperbola for its graph but it is not a function. Try y = 4/x.
