good friends:

have many of the same interests as you
keep in regular contact
are loyal and trustworthy
listen to you well
respect you
are there for you in your times of difficulties.

A good friend does not judge you, will not backstab you, will always listen to you. They don't like you for your money, or your car, or anything in particular except for you. They like you also for how much of a friend you are to them. You make each other laugh, and cry together when you need. Secrets are safe with a good friend, and the love between you is completely unconditional. A good friend won't crowd you, but will give you space when you need it, yet is always willing to fill that space at a moment's notice. A good friend is a rare and wonderful thing to be cherished and nurtured for ever.

Trustworthy is one, a friend who you can trust is extremely important.
They need to build your self esteem up-if they make you feel bad about yourself all the time then they aren't real friends. They have to be mature, they can't be all immature and making you feel as if your friend is a two year old you're hanging out with. There's a time for silliness and a time for seriousness.
They also have to be kind and not tell you what to do-basically they can't be demanding. Because people who push around their friends aren't being true.

If you're faithful, polite, mature (like act your age) and are kind to your friend and your friend's friends then you are a true friend.
