This is because 13*13=169 so the 13 goes on the outside of the square root sign but 2 is still left over- so it goes under the sign.

Try Newton's method. x = sqrt(171) x^2 = 171 x^2 - 171 = 0 I'm sure you can differentiate that and apply newton's method too.
