Keep all of your script updated, apply fixes when they are released. Many "hackers" will use exploits they find in poorly secured scripts like cutenews or phpbb.
Have a complicated password with numbers, letters and capitalized letters. Don't give it out.
Be careful with what file permissions (chmod) you use, like 777, etc. Some combinations allow outsiders to write or execute files on the server, which isn't good.
Use different passwords for databases, admin panels, email accounts, etc. If one account is compromised, you don't want someone having access to your paypal or something else with the same password...

Protecting your website against hackers entails following some technical steps including securing your .htaccess file, making sure the permissions for folders and files on your website is correct and updating your Content Management system like Wordpress often, and importantly closely monitoring it.
When I had just one website I could do all this by myself (because I have a Computer Science degree..) but when I started helping 50 businesses with their websites I decided to use websiteSheriff
They do all the donkey work of securing the websites and provide a monthly report to My clients with MY logo on it... so we are all happy.
If anything goes wrong, then I will deal with my clients, but so far only happy days.
I can Highly recommend websiteSheriff.com
They are still in invitation only mode, but connect with them on Twitter and if you say FullofAnswers sent you they will help you out.
Using Remote Desktop they also cleaned the computer of one of my clients which was so infected it kept on stealing passwords...
