my computer frequently freezes during start-up. (usually when searching for the ide-drivers) all I have to do is press ctrl+alt+delete and it restarts and it works fine. what is the real problem and how can I fix it. I know that my computer is set from bios to halt on system errors (if i set it not to halt then I get a loud beep every time I start up and its annoying.) anybody know how to fix the error?

One short beep means everything is OK - long & loud is bad, but you can google for 'beep codes' & find possible answers.

If BIOS is set to halt on errors, then you may have a virus that is trying to write to protected areas.

Once it runs, go to housecall.trendmicro.com and get a complete scan. Then get protection.

Perhaps the EIDE cable is faulty. Try unplugging it, straighten it out a bit, and then reconnect it.
The problem just started happening, or did it always do that? Maybe you need a BIOS upgrade, although it's very risky. Check your motherboard manufacturer's web site to see if there's been any kind of updates or work-arounds.
You're not overclocking the CPU are you?
Try changing the bus frequency back to normal if you are. If you can, see if you can try out your hard drive on a friend's computer. When a drive sort of 'sticks' when it's started cold, then that could mean that the hard drive is dying.

You could have some spyware jacking with your computer.Try using Spy-bot Search and Destroy in safe mode. Ad-Aware will also be helpful to you. Try doing a scandisk also. Windows Defender is good to have too. The MBR on your hard drive may be corrupt, try doing a repair using your Win XP installation disc. Maybe has something to do with that "unknown device". That you mentioned in your last question. PCI drivers load up before Win XP.

in the experience that your computing gadget did not incorporate a cd then it would have a restoration partition - commence>courses>gadget restoration, or at startup it would inform you F10 or F11 for restoration. for the period of restoration you have an option to backup your information & information so which you won't lose something, yet might could replace your dwelling house windows & reinstall a great number of the courses you further.
