what do you use gadget wise to determine how many miles there is from city to city

There is a device with a small wheel that records the mileage as it is run across a map however good maps already have the miles posted between major routes. These can be added up to go from city to city.
The net is full of stuff that can be used - Mapquest.com is one.
Google "distance between cities" instead of "mileage" . Yes use the quotes!

You can look up point to point driving directions and estimated mileage at places like http://www.mapquest.com.
But your cars odometer is probably best as routes can vary.
Some GPS/Navigation systems give you estimated mileage, but they are only as accurate as you are in following the prescribed route.

go to google maps.
put in starting address and destination address
It will tell you how many miles.
