what would be the recomended way to install automatic gate openers on a cedar gate? would it be best to place the openers on the sides of the stone pillars that hold up the fence or on the same side that the gate is attached to?

I would think to mount it on the pillar side. This will give the support the item needs. If mounted on the gate side the gate will have to support the weight and wear out quickly. Also you can add a wheel to the end of the gate to roll along the ground if possible to help relieve the weight of the gate and make it easier to open and close the gate.
