what would be the best way to...?

what would be the recomended way to install gate openers on a cedar gate? would it be best to place the openers on the sides of the stone pillars that hold up the fence or on the same side that the gate is attached to?

Same side as mounting.Allways read and follow manufactures instructions,cause you definitely don't want someone to get hurt,really.

If I understand your question, either way would work, fastening it on the gate side would make the entrance width smaller.
