This also applies to "next Sunday" and "last Monday"...

You will never get a definitive answer, but this is how I see and use it.

"Next" refers to the one after "this."

Today is Monday, so next monday is the one next week, since we are still in "this" Monday.

Next Tuesday will be the day after next Monday. Tomorrow will be this Tuesday.

I have seen legitimate references to the "other" usage of "next" in reference to time, such as in "next Tuesday is tomorrow."

However, I have seen more references to the usage I wrote about at the beginning of "this" answer.

I've had this argument many a time with people. I agree with you. Today being Tuesday, then Saturday and Sunday constitute 'This Weekend.'

'Next Weekend' is the 'next' consecutive weekend after 'this weekend.'

'Last' Monday is over one week ago, as the Monday just gone should be labelled 'yesterday' or if it were say Wednesday or more, then I would say 'the Monday just gone.'

Same at our house. This weekend means this coming weekend. Next weekend means the next weekend after this weekend.

I'm with you. What's happening in four days is "this weekend." In 11 days it will be "next weekend."

Sorry wives everywhere but I have to agree with the husband on this one. Has to be the first time in history that a woman (married here too) sided with a man :)

I'm with you. "Next" would be referring to the one after "this" weekend, which is the one closest.
