I think it is better because you can concentrate more on your studies and college, rather than your living situation. Living in an off campus apartment is to much of a distraction.
College is enough of an expense. Better to focus your attention on it rather than else where.

I think that it's a good idea to live on campus the first year, but only if you plan on staying any other year. I didn't stay on campus my first year which was last year and i do now, i feel so lost. I don't have a lot of friends and me and my roommate don't talk much since she already had friends from last year.

That's a toss-up. Check your college of choice -- some have mandatory residency for freshmen.
If you live at college, you can get homework help 24/7. You can go to the college library late late at night.
The downside is that occasionally dorms will be noisy, or provide non-academic distractions.
If I had to do it all again, I'd still live on campus (which is what I did years ago).
