I found a company called TravelEx with retail locations in L.A., but their rate is horrible. Today's XE.net mid-market rate for UK pounds is £1.00 -> $1.90. TravelEx will buy £1 for $1.75!

Pick a reputable bank and do it there.

Out here in Massachusetts there is a place. It closes at 4pm, though.

Head down Main St. When you pass by where the old market used to be, take a left. Follow this street down to River Ave. Take a right onto Charles Rd. Go down a half-click and take a right.

When you come to the rotary, bear left and drive around rotary until you see the sign for East Boston. Take a left off the rotary and head North.

Big building on the right that has a big sign for a K-Mart plaza. Turn into plaza and take a right. If you pass by the bank, you've gone too far.

The place is on the left. Parking is in the rear.

Hope this helps.

If you are in LA, There is a place called AFEX (Associated Foreign Exchange) in Beverly Hills (400 block of Beverly Blvd.) that seems to have good rates and low commission. Liberty Coin (accross from Costco on Willow St. in Long Beach) is good, too.
