Pi is irrational because it is irrational, i.e. it is not calculable as the ratio of integers. This fact was first proven by Lambert in 1770. There are a number of subsequent proofs, some slicker than others, all requiring calculus. Pi is also a transcendental number, meaning that it is not the root of any polynomial whose coefficients are are integers. That was proven later. Which is probably more than you wanted to know about pi, so I'll stop now.

Like, don't be so down on Pi, that's just the way Pi is baby. That's like asking why the wind blows, or will we ever walk on the moon, ya know? Pi is emotiona, and irrational, always has been, always will be. You just have to find yourself the right piece of pi and settle in. By the way, you may wanna change that slang, the ladies here in America don't take kindly to being called Pi, or a piece of pie either. Ya dig?

It is irrational because an irrational number is "not rational" or in other words it cannot be expressed as a fraction....3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749445923078164062862089986280348253421170679 and it never ends...computers are still trying to calculate more digits of pi daily....so as i was saying to be a rational number it must be able to be expressed as a fraction....or a ration one number to the other....and pi can't...it's just like "e" that you use as the base of a natural log function.

Irrational means: Can't be expressed as the ratio of two integers, as explained above. Irrational = Ir - ratio - nal
