To what extent does modern Western culture cater to mediocrity? Is our society dumbing down?

This society has been dumbing down for at least 30 years.. the evidence was presented in the early '80's when entry levels were reduced for colleges. Too many were not making the necessary qualifications to gain acceptance.

There is definitely a dumbing down of American society going on in the arts and media. The movie Animal House had a profound effect on the college student's self image, for example. Popular music videos more frequently glorify thugs and booty, rather than delve into issues. Exploding cars and violent special effects began to do a lot to make a film more popular in the 70s.

I believe our society is dumbing down in every aspect....we cater to mediocrity everyday by pandering to the masses....
instead of setting the bar high for a goal to be reached, like it once was, we just keep lowering it and lowering it because "its not fair" that it's so difficult to attain.....yadda yadda crap!

I don't think it is so much the western culture as it is a cross between socialism and political correctness that has invaded the western culture.

It always seems as if culture caters to superiority.
