The guy may be a great coach back in the 70s Raider era but he is not a good sportscaster because he's always redundant and pointing out the obvious (i.e. "y'know, if he ran the ball for a few more yards, he would've had a first down"). But it does provide some comic relief.

Anyone agree with me or am I blaspheming Monday/Sunday Night football?

I agree 100%. The reality is that Madden really is a funny guy. In the real sense of the word he is not a sportscaster but rather a color commentator. There is a big difference between doing play by play, which is really difficult, and just blowing smoke up every ones butts!! I think your assessment is right on!!

John is an extremely knowledgeable sportscaster, redundancy comes with the territory on a live broadcast. His elder status in the game as a former player and coach gives him access and rapport with players and coaches whom he treats fairly. He doesn't seem to play favorites like the college broadcasters do and he is still enthusiastic about the game. He doesn't spend a lot of time dwelling on the negative elements in pro football and that positive approach rubs off on the whole program. You can't dismiss success.

He used to be a good sportscaster but age has definately slowed his thought process down and made him a bit redundant. Like so many great sports minds, he doesnt know when to hang em up. But his name is John Madden so he'll always have a job somewhere

Because he played and coached football, so the broadcasters of the game consider him a great perspective and a all knowing mind of what will happen in games of football. Think of him as Eistein of Football, and you will understand.

i can understand why you would say that but he does know what he's talking about. the guy eats, sleeps, and breaths football and has the history to prove it. some people can only hear the tv so mabey he's just considerate.
