...when I've been through 2 car crashes that totalled both vehicles (a ranger and focus) and I was deployed to Iraq for a year, what else is there that would justify a bad memory??? I don't get it... I mean if I could remember 1/2 the crap I forget I would, it ain't like I think of how I could forget it, that makes no sense at all.

Its not a bad thing! We all forget things!
It sounds to me like the people that are on your case are the problems - not you!
If it helps - why not keep a diary and write dates like birthdays etc in there and refer to it daily - or put reminders in your phone.
If you have a bad memory - you just need to work that little bit harder to remember simple things- but it is doable!

Sometimes people think that a person has a selective memory when they only remember things that seem to conveniently help the person out - whereas they seem to forget things that make the person look bad. You need to do some heavy soul-searching to figure out whether you are using a 'bad memory' as an excuse for bad behavior (even sub-consciously)...just think about it.

Sorry you have had such a run of bad luck. Perhaps you mind shuts out certain things because of the trauma you have been through.

Often bad memory is caused by stress, and whilst you think you can recall things your actually so stressed that it plays strange tricks on the brain.

My husband is like that, I have accused him of having selective memory when in fact he is in need of stress counselling.

I hope you will seek help before it gets out of hand. I know that this sort of thing can generate anger and frustration. Perhaps people do not realise that you are stressed and perhaps you should explain how you feel.

Best wishes and good night to you. xx

i can add that at present it's too much of information around and I suspect that brain (very clever) just protect itself with shutting some of that Niagara Waterfall of info. Bad or selective doesn't matter. What will be next!? One will be remember all pin numbers, screen names, passwords, log in info but not what his/her partner said. Is it selective enough?
