I thought some research on the web might answer you. It might but I don't seem smart enough to find it.

So here are some thoughts that may be totally incorrect. Teaching in the past was almost all female (and maybe still is) I suspect that is why the pay was low to start with and of course men set the rules. As the options for women was abysmal there were lots of them to draw on.

Now they are paid from local taxes and what ever they are called the local elected officials have to raise taxes to pay more (and remember every vote cast is preceeded by the thought will this help or hurt the next election cycle).
I don't recall many taxpayers running into the local tax payer saying tax me more so we can have higher paid teachers.

So they started low and have never caught up.

Also many view the job as a 9-10 month job while they (the tax payer) work 12 so it seems reasonable they should get less. Of course they fail to consider they have to work more than 40 hours to do what they do.

Also today they have to put up with a lot more crap than they did when I went to school they ought to be paid hazardous duty pay in many areas.

Private school teachers, college professors, and teachers in wealthy school districts tend to make good money.

The reason many public school teachers have relatively small salaries has to do with the fact that the school's budget comes from property taxes. In areas with low land value, the school will not recieve as much money, and therefore the teachers won't be paid as much.

Because they pay more money to jail guards and prisons instead of schools and teachers. think about this, if there are enough schools and well-paid teachers, the need for juvenile halls and prisons would decrease becuase these kids would have a chance to survive the real world without resorting to gang activities.

so sad...

meanwhile, we're building schools in countries the USA invaded..

It is a pink ghetto. Most teachers are women and most people beleive women should be paid less money since men are the breadwinners. Also people think that teaching is an easy job. NOT TRUE!
