Where and when? Slavery has existed for a very long time, pretty much all over the world. Consequently, the institution varies with the culture under consideration. In ancient Rome, intelligent slaves who could run a business could keep a portion of the profits, and even become rich. This was despite the fact that slaves could be tortured live on stage at will. In ancient Ireland, slaves were generally captives of raiding expeditions (usually women or children). Once they learned to speak Gaelic, their status immensely improved, and they were able to become members of the clan that owned them, thereby becoming free.
In Muslim countries a slave is still a human being, in contrast to the status of slaves in the American South, who were considered animals. The physical repulsion and the racist ideology that were features of American slavery were absent from the institution in other parts of the world. American slaves were, however, better off than slaves on Barbados, who were worked to death with very inadequate food. American slaves could and were encouraged to grow their own food, so that they were better fed than some slaves elsewhere.

slaves did not actually own anything because they didn't own their lives. any "possessions" actually belonged to the owner. it depends on how kind they were and the time and place in history as to what exactly salves were given to use for themselves.
