I have a computer problem at work. First it would not load during start up. So we had the local computer guy come and "fix" it. Now it will not install network programs. It freezes while installing. I think the computer has some serious crashing issues due to it being the computer that holds all the programs on our network. I have brought it up with my boss many times that we need a seperate computer for the programs but she states everything is fine and we just need to reinstall programs. Which we can't! What is your opinion on what we should do?

First of all, I admire your patience - I wish your boss was more proactive about the situation and would purchase a reliable, new PC since it's function is important on your network. Since you cannot change your boss, and the local computer guy did what he could with the existing PC, I suggest that you identify a different PC on your network that could be used as the one that "holds all the programs on our network". Perhaps your boss could get a brand new computer for themselves (or someone else) and you can use that replaced, working PC for the current function.

Your boss is not looking at the big picture, but you have to do what you can to present some options to him/her and hopefully the boss will be smart enough to realize the new PC should be used to replace your faulty PC.

My suspicion is that the faulty PC has a motherboard or memory problem. If you have another similar PC you could try swapping the memory to see if it works. Another possibility is that it is overheating and needs a new fan.

Fire your boss. Anyone who cannot or will not understand that the frustration, inefficiency and loss of productivity greatly outweighs the cost of fixing the problem doesn't have the judgement necessary to make decisions. Period.

Failing that, explain to her how much it is costing her and the company to have you all unproductive for so long. Compare the cost in lost work hours versus the cost of just doing something right. Put it in dollars and cents. Do the math, then show it to her.

Failing that, you have two potential problems. Either the OS didn't load correctly initially (which will give you erratic, frustrating issues on a regular basis), or you have a hardware problem (anything from a failing hard drive, memory, processor... many possibilities). I would save your data onto another computer, then completely wipe the hard drive and re-install your OS. If it installs cleanly, try reloading your programs and see if it works. That may solve your problem.

If you can't get a clean install of the OS with a wiped hard drive, you have a hardware problem. Take your computer to a pro and actually have it fixed.

Obviously whoever is in charge has no money left in their budget to spend on correcting the problem or is one of those people that is "always right" and isn't going to listen to you.

A professional evaluation of your current systems is the only way to make progress, some companies will even do it for free as a loss leader for the job of sorting it out.
You could try planting the seed of having the systems evaluated, reverse psychology isn't particularly difficult if you plan your approach.

If it's always causing crashing ... then try to format the PC ... or replace it ... the server should be one of the best PCs in the network
