In my new car it has the home link system (basically a garage door opener). I was reading the manual and it says you can set it up to turn on your porch lights, etc. I went to home depot, but the guy didn't know what I needed. Anyone know what I need? I need a new porch light anyway, so want to get one that is able to do this.

You need a receiver for your remote control (check frequency compatibility- radio shack preps). Put Low voltage relay (from electrical supply store) at light and wire to link receiver. You will also need a very small transformer (also from electrical supply store) to power receiver and low voltage relay. Use the receiver to switch relay, therefor light.

The Home Link System (in newer cars like yours) is sending out a wireless signal that can be read by some existing Home Automation and Security Systems. You may have to do a bit more work, but I am sure that The "freeWire" products by Black & Decker are compatibel with Home Link System (after 2001 cars).
I believe (but not 100% sure) that X-10 products might work as well. You then have to program your in-car transmitter to the channel & item, and a "Receiver / Lamp Module" will do the job for your porch light, independently from the garage door or light.

Garage door openers usually have light sockets with them. Use one as the power source for your porch light.
If you also want a separate different switch to operate the light, use a separate switch and power source. Just be sure that the hot and neutral leads are the same for both circuits.

I had that home link thing in my last car but I could never get it to work and I didnt feel like having someone come out to do it for me. Had I known it would also turn on outside lights I would have tho. I would call your car company (mine was on a Cadillac so I just called them, I think you may also be able to call your service dept) and have them send someone out or tell you what to buy.
