I know my mother but she lives far away from me but i don't want to be considered a ward

You should go to your local governmental offices where you can get an original copy of your birth certificate. This should have your mother's name on it and thats a place to start.

I am sure your fathers attorney will let you know. However it is possible if you arent of an adult age you could become a ward of the state, meaning that the state in which you live obtains custody of you.
Since I dont know any more info regarding your situation and I dont know what state you live in I cant give you a better answer.

try talking to other family members and find out and most parents find god parents for there children most of the time they would end up being your legal gaurdian. or talk to your family and see who your father was closest with and see if the would help you out on this one
