I'm not referring to anything specific. Be it photography, graphic design, or drawing and painting...Just in general, art.

The starving artist is a myth. Underfunded, underemployed, less well paid than others of similar education but not impoverished.

ILM is one of many examples of how technology has impacted arts and entertainment. With burgeoning technologies upon us, we have seen an unprecedented growth in job opportunities for artists. Therefore, one can ask: whatever happened to the starving artist?

According to a survey quoted in the Village Voice, a weekly New York City newspaper, "the starving artist was always in large part a myth. The survey, conducted by Columbia University's Research Center for the Arts and Culture, questioned 7,700 artists. Most artists surveyed were highly educated, had health insurance and retirement plans. And as many as 75 percent owned computers." The survey's author, Joan Jeffri, says that "Artists who live in America are overwhelmingly and squarely in the middle class."

Well, the #1 highest-paying art job is Internationally Reknowned Art Star. Take Lucian Freud, for example; his paintings sell for millions of dollars. All it takes in relentless self-promotion, talent, and ridiculous good fortune.

#2 is advertising work (television or print). Look into it.

WEB design is the highest growing, highest demanding need for graphic artists. You can play around in Photoshop and Illustrator all day long, but if you can't also design a web-site, you will not be hired.

Web illustration and web design. I'd learn both.

You can get into print advertising, but it pays less.
