I'm sure he just used composites of what he knew had happened back then and put names on it. I wouldnt call it a lie... more of a tapestry if you will.

Much of the "Roots" story was plagiarized from a book written by Harold Courlander. Haley was sued for copyright infringement, paid $650,000 to settle the matter, and issued a written statement acknowledging that the copying had occurred. His family genealogy is fictitious, as it cannot be substantiated from public records searches. Also, Haley completely minimizes the role that African blacks had in the slave trade, which could not have existed without the support of the blacks.

The pain and injustice of slavery was NOT a lie and that is the story that Roots is based on--the everyday trials and tribulations in the life of a slave. Maybe that exact story and those exact characters never existed, but I promise you life WAS that bad or worse for many slaves.
