In Ian Ran kin's Novel "A Good Hanging", John Rebus investigates an arson attack on a bird watcher. I have read all Jane Austen's novels and the only birds I remember being mentioned in them were being served at the dinner table!

a bird watcher is nicknamed a twitcher so maybe thats the answer?
