That depends on if the roots die. When a lawn turns brown it is simply to preserve what water there is for the roots. However if the roots die then you are in trouple. You can tell the difference by the way it looks if you start to see dirt patches you are in trouble. Think about it this way. Every winter lawns die and every spring they are back again.

Here in North Texas we experienced a drought this summer, and I only watered the flowers, vegs and herbs. The lawn was completely dead. My nursery guy said it was just dormant. Looked pretty dead to me.
Well, it finally started raining, after the first rain the lawn was fifty percent green within 2 days.
It rained a few more times within the next two weeks and we had to mow and weedeat because the grass was over 4 inches high, everywhere.

Assuming all of it didn't die, it'll come back after regular watering. Might
take a while. And also, what is left may be a little stressed and a good, long
hard freeze may do some more damage.

i used to think so.... however, after NOT watering my lawn for eight years and watching it 'die' several times over, i am convinced that it is impossible to permanently damage your lawn.. i heartly recommend ignoring your lawn totally, saves on water too!

Probably not. Lawns get this way all the time in hot weather and come back.

If the grass dies, that's as permanent as you can get. If it just went dormant, it will come back when it cools off and gets regular water again.
Dormant is ok. Dead is dead=bad.

No, enough water can bring back the brownest of yards....May take a few weeks but it will return with daily deep waterings.

I would imagine that the majority of grass will die and not come back. You may get small patches that will grow again. Mostly you will get weeds. They grow anywhere, anytime.
