I created my very own wallpaper border for my new house and my friend said I should patent it. How do I do this??

I don't think you can patent a wallpaper design. You could copyright the design because that is what you own, but wallpaper is common household item.
If you have a new process of making or constructing the paper or even a new way of printing wallpaper, that may be patented because it is a process.
To copyright something, just mail it to yourself. The postage mark acts as a copyright date.

Talk to an intellectual property attorney. A good part of what they do is write patents for people.
