Typical, as soon as you mention Hitler peoples instinctive reaction is hell and damnation, remembering his evil atrocities and being the architect of catastrophic human misery.
However, I'm sure you're aware how Hitler became to be the Chancellor of Germany, it was either him of have the Bolsheviks in power. As far a "Great Leader" is concerned, I'd of voted for him in 1930's beleaguered Germany.
Along came this socialist leader who promised the nation that they can rise again to be a force to be reckoned with, through industry and productivity. Initially Hitler was seen as the new Messiah, and quite rightly so. Only when he had total control did his plans turn to evil, the rest is history.

This is something of strange question ok he did put country back on it feet after the great depression but by time he was in power the econmy had started to recover anyway, also he partly did by taking women and jew out of the work force not a good thing. However he also spend so much of arms he would bancrupted germany before long if he had not launched world war 11 which was once again disaster for germany which in ruins by 1945.also the nazi were rather evil. For great leader of germany how about bismark or fredrick the great or someone more modern like willy brant

Hitler destroyed Germany, how could he even be considered a 'great leader'

Frederick the great was indeed a great German leader BUT, and its a big but. What do you class as 'Germany'? The nation of Germany as we know it today did not actually come into being until 1871.

I would say that Bismark in possibly the greatest leader Germany has ever had (even though officially he was not the head of state)

If only Germany had chosen to lead the world through peacefull means rather than war. How far in advance was the German empire than the rest of the world before 1914-18?

Well, he didn't lead at all....he was notably bone-idle.

All he ever did was rant like the madman he was; and make no mistake, he WAS mad.

In fact, the Hitler regime was run by the Nazi military in a climate of fear, which is not a good way to run a country.

As for getting the country back on its' feet, it may have escaped your attention that the country was destroyed, virtually bankrupted and had lost some of its' finest young men by the time hostilities ended.

Germany's post-war success was as much to do with outside help as anything else.

Nevertheless, Germany was (and still is) a very energetic and brilliantly inventive nation, with an impressive track-record of superb engineering. In fact, the only thing that Hitler couldn't destroy was the academic and scientific knowledge of the people, but he destroyed everything else.

If by best leader you mean a homicidal maniac who killed more people than any other of his country's leaders and left his own country a bombed out shell of a nation poverty striken divided and conquered then yes he was.

Overall he was a complete failure- apart from morally his leadership of Germany was based on production for war and consequently was unsustainable. If you want a great German leader there are several to choose from- Frederick the Great for example- successful military commander, reforming emperor of Prussia and also philosopher and literary thinker. There are many others as well.

Remember Hitler claimed the peace Noble prize in '38.
Hitler may well have been the very best and very worst leader Germany has ever seen.
While many folks condemn Hitler for his gruesome killings of Jews, we must remember that Hitler was boldly doing what other European nations at that time wished they could have done; they all hated Jews and were not too upset when Hitler roasted them by the dozens. The second world war was not directly a result of Jew abuse; Hitler was doing much more,,,he was conquering his neighbors.
I want to think that Hitler originally meant well for Germany; he was a military genius and all Europe embraced the new leader...however, Hitler proved to be a very sick individual and most of his early heroics were swallowed by his ruthless maniatics.

Otto von Bismarck was a much greater leader than Hitler. He was the man behind the unification of Germany. By destroying French power in the Franco-Prussian war of 1871, he ensured that the unification would not be interrupted.

He was wise enough to know that since Germany is near the centre of Europe, he strongly discouraged opening a 2 front war at any time - the very same principle that Hitler flouted, much to his demise.

You seem to ignore the latter part of Adolph Hitler's legacy - the utter ruin of Germany. My wife is FROM Germany and HATES Hitler - she grew up in the devastation that was post WWII Germany. A great leader? He banned scientific research for the first two years of the war. If he hadn't done this he might have had rockets, atomic bombs, and jets to fight with, and would probably have been unstoppable with the availability of these weapons. He failed to take the air fields in England and allowed his Luftwaffe bombers to go in to England WITHOUT fighter cover. He executed some of his best generals (Rommel), and was so bad as a strategist that Winston Churchill did NOT want him assasinated because (to quote Churchill) "He's the best strategist we've (the Allies) got!" A great leader? He sent his troops into Russian in the fall wearing summer uniforms... are you starting to "get it" that Hitler was a lunatic and a TERRIBLE LEADER???

Although everyone knows about Hitler killing millions of people, some do not realize the situation that Germany faced after W W I. they were in a very bad situation because of losing the war, and all of the provisions that they had to agree to in the Versailles treaty. The unemployment was very high amoung other things. Hitler came along and helped pull Germany out of the slump. In that aspect he was good for Germany, but, of course, we all know what happened after that!!

I greatly prefer Attila the Hun. He ruled over the countries which Hitler so coveted and attempted to acquire through invasion. Unlike Hitler, he was a winner. He has even been celebrated in Norse sagas and various musical works, including an opera by Verdi. While Hitler in his cowardly way committed suicide along with his lover, Eva Braun, Attila died far more dramatically, of a nosebleed caused by an excess of booze on his wedding night. No, there's no comparison between the two!
