I am pretty sure I have a virus, but my norton will not pick it up, and I am pretty sure I got it in here as a few weeks back I clicked on something someone put intheir question and my computer restarted.
Here are the problems. We use windows XP
The registry keeps having problems, everytime I run the registry mechanic, it picks something up, Norton won't allow me to fix anything with the disk doctor, but I can run it to diagnos, but it won'tcheck or fix errors in the Security descriptors, and skips file data and surface text. Today, my norton closed by itself, andI cannot run my kodak easy share program. The kodak program will open in safe mode, but not on normal mode. Any ideas, suggestions, please help my. I really want to get the kodak program to work as we got married this weekend and I want to tranfer the pictures

I am scanning straight for the semantec site right now, but I have pictures inthe kodak program that I don't want to lose if I have to re-format, and I hope that I won't have to do that.

I would suggest the following:
1. Install AVG antivirus (it's free). It may pick up what norton didn't (that's been my experience more than once).
2. Install Ad-Aware (it's also free) and scan for spyware. Antivirus will not pick up spyware, and vice versa.
3. Install WinPatrol (also free). It will show all kinds of stuff that can be malicious, but not defined as virus or spyware. Delete/uninstall all the programs you don't want/use.
This may not repair any damage that was already done, but it will just about guarantee killing the bug.

Your problem is having Nortons. Nine years ago I found Nortons to be the very worse garbage on the market. It never found one virus and caused all kind of conflict with my entire system. When I removed the program I was shocked to find out that Nortons will leave atleast 300 plus fragments glued to all your files and hidden all over your system.

I had to use www.rosecitysoftware.com --Their Registry First Aid, to remove all the fragments, and then reboot my system.

Myself I would remove Nortons and download from www.lavasoft.com their free Ad-Adware Personal SE and run this excellent program. If there is a trojan virus or spyware this program will detect and remove.

Or your can download from www.superantispyware.com their free Superantispyware program. This is another excellent program that will scan every option in your system. Scans 173,000 plus options in my system. Plus you get free updates with both of them an all new versions are free.

If you decide to remove Nortons Garbage, you may want to use the antivirus system I use. This program is used by the Government of China.

Being a clinical psychiatrist I have a moral and legal obligation to keep my pc 100% clean from all virus/spyware/malware.

I tested every free and purchase antivirus system known. An I found only one that actually works 100%. Never had a virus or spyware in my system in nine years.

Go to, www.filseclab.com and download thier Twister AntiTrojan Virus program. (You will have to pay a small one time fee). You will never have to pay an annual fee for updates, support or new versions. The one time fee is for life. ($29.99)

The software company is located in Beijing, China. They have excellent support, frequent large signature updates an as always all new versions are free. No annual fee for anything.

Comes with a real time scanner that really works. Actually I am quite amazed over the nine years how well it works.

Scans memory on startup.
Real time scanning in the background.
Open any webpage with an embedded trojan/spyware or malware and scanner will clean on the spot. An It is really removed from your system.

Download any kind of program from zips, all compressed files, software files, music, etc, etc, an if there is a hidden embedded trojan, spyware, malware, this program will stop the download and clean. An will advise you to end the download.

Will even find a virus in the installer wizard, like "Wise Installer". And will stop the installation while it is being installed and clean. Plus this program always will trace back who installed the trojan.

I had a trojan in and wizard installer. Twister caught the trojan and stopped the installation. I wrote the origianl company and told them the wizard installer had an embedded trojan to steal your data. The company now uses thier own installer.

You can't beat this software for a one time purchase fee only. Actually I don't know of any antivirus progam that even comes close to this state of the art technology.

All I can say it is worth the one time fee. Your pc cost alot of money and you don't want it destroyed. Plus your privacy is protected at all times.

There is nothing in it for me to praise this program. I tell it like it is. If it is garbage then I will say so.

Believe me it will be a cold day in hell before I use Nortons ever again.

Remove your disk doctor as you must have a valid registry key and reinstall after you have found the virus or viruses. Always reboot after a virus is detected and removed.

Clinical Psychiatrist, France

Likewise I use Windows XP Prof.

Sounds like you've definately got something there. Can you virus scan it in safe mode? You may well end up having to reinstall windows and start again from scratch. Don't delete your photo's from your camera card until your computer is fixed, or you could lose them forever. I've seen a few people complaining of viruses from this site, don't use the links!

I) re Kodak, if really stuck you can get Picaso which is really good.

For ease of use and management of your photo files try Kodak easyshare software http://www.kodak.com

or Picasso. http://www.picasa.google.com/
Find and enjoy the pictures on your computer in seconds.
A free software download from Google.

Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organised by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organised.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures – you can email, print photos home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even post pictures on your own blog.

For advanced and fully functional photographic manipulation gimp2 is very similar to Photoshop and is available from http://www.gimp.org

The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, and an image format converter.

2) re the malware problem. Down load any of these you dont have and run them through one at a time.

Antiviral. (free)

AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com

Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.

I would check to see if you have any mauleware. Somtimes Norton's won't fix mauleware, becuse it dosen't think it is a threat.

Good Luck.
