what is a non-living thing that show the chracteristic of having a life span

The easy answer is a car or almost any object made from moving parts that will eventually come to a halt because of a variety of causes (from entropy to lack of oil ...)

I guess the tough answer would be to think of a class of non-living things whose life-spans are as predictable as those of living things - e.g. we know the average life of human beings, the appropriate standard deviations, etc. Into this category might fall the radioactive elements - we know how long they take to decay into a different isotope ... I'll leave it there and see how many answers it provokes.
