That's a very sweeping statement!
I know if some one went at me with an axe my first instinct would be to run like fcuk! I wouldn't hang around wondering if talking to my assailant might be a better plan!

No they don't, and you can't make a statement like that either.
"NEVER ACT ON THEIR FIRST INSTINCTS"
So you have just stated that through out the history of the world and every living being in it NO ONE has ever acted on their first instinct...
Well guess what?
I just did...
:o)
Have a wonderful day.

The reason is that we are not like animals in that we have other mental attributes such as a conscience, free-will, the capacity for rational thinking. If we continually followed out initial instincts we would not be able to survive within a communty setting which is based on social contract and therefore, on the consideration of the impact of one's actions on other fellow human beings.

I try to as often as possible, because they are usually right. Gut instinct. It's helped me many times. But yes, self doubt can hold you back and make you second guess at times.

Because for some gut instincts are much better for them than first instincts.

Because your first instinct could be an overreaction or human/sinful reaction. That's why we think things through before acting.

We have lost faith in them. Which is a pity, because our instincts represent accumulated wisdom, including many things that we have forgotten.
