The noises I'm talking about sound like the other person is pressing random buttons.

It happens on both mobiles and landlines. I thought it was other calls trying to get through initially but the frequency this beeping occurs makes this seem impossible - why is it for example that I only get loads of calls when I'm on the phone? It doesn't make sense!

Could it be Big Brother listening in on your phonecalls? I've ruled out individuals spying on phonecalls because it doesn't just happen on my phonelines.

Does anyone have any ideas? Or has anyone else experienced this?

This has happened to me on a variety of phones (mobiles and landlines): so this rules out any battery-related problems or electrical problems.

Before now, I've even asked the other person whether they're pressing buttons. On that occasions they said no. Someone even asked me if I was pressing buttons and I wasn't.

It's a relatively new thing and I recon it has something to do with national security. Dare I mention the 'T' word?

Could be a few things, if you have " Call Waiting " enabled on your mobile, it is a way of telling you that someone is calling you, but if you are calling a landline or vice versa, it is what is called a " Minute Minder " some companies have this on the system, it is quite annoying

It could be a malfunction of the phone system. Or you could go to Radio Shack and for a small cost, buy a device you stick to your phone. A light will come on if your phone is bugged.

It may be a signal that the conversation is being recorded. Telephone recorders are supposed to put such beeps on the line, but the rule is seldom adhered to nowadays.
