open lean to? determine how far off u want to go and if u go only slitly lower than shed roof u can tie in to side under shingle line for lean to roof. set treated 4x4 posts off corners of shed at desired distance about 12" deep. one for each corner. drive 2-3 stakes about 2-4 feet from 4x4 and use scrap wood or 1x2 to brace 4x4 verticle. pore sac-crete in post hole around post and hose in some water or use bucket, now, very important, go and look in the frig. if you got a cold beer nows the time to drink it and think about what kind of roof you want. shingles, couragated fiberglass 'the green stuff that lets light throug' like on a green house, tin. if you go shingle'n it you'll have to put on plywood decking and tarpaper. if you go other you'll need to just lay on top of rafters and overlap. using special nails with rubber o-ring type thingy to keep water from seeping in. when concrete sets 48-72 hours. run a band length wise from 4x4 to 4x4, nail, or screw at top of 4x4. now go from 4x4 to shed, u'll have to make a triky angel cut probably. u'll be using 2x6's probly. if small go with 2x4. drive a nail in the 4x4 to hold the 2x of choice at that end and hold other end to shed. there's a gap at bottom. measure it and apply that measurment to the top of 2x of yur choice, from bottom corner 'where gap was' scrib a line to the mark uo made when u transfered measurment.cut it. now it will lay on the out side wall of shed toe nail or screw. u can get a rafter bracket at your home improvment store to hold the rafters to the wall. will be bit more secure. after the two for front and end r up. figure on 16'' centers or 24'' centers. depends on how much u want to spend and whats on top. 16'' for shingles and 24'' for other.

I live in Australia as well and i know what you mean about your horse shedding because my horse is doing the same. I just use a metel shedding blade and it really does seem to help i also have taken my horses rug off and he just rolls around to get rid off lots of the hair. Maybe you horse will do the same but I have found that if you use a shedding blade often enough then the hair in a way becomes trained to it (i don't think that makes sense because hair isn't alive but i don't know how else to say it)

Your first answer is good, but can be done easier than sinking the posts. If you pre-drill the posts at both ends with 2 -3/8" holes, and run lag bolts from your local hardware store, you can actually set the posts up as free standing, and avoid needing a building permit.
