I had a friend that was a genius. He was the smartest, most irritating, talented little twerp i'd ever met.
his senior year, he had been offered early scholarships to five different colleges.
he got a little curious, and started selling pot.
another student found out, reported him, and when he got arrested, his parents went ballistic.
they (in so many words) told him he was a f*** up, and that he had just destroyed the rest of his life...
so he went into the bathroom with his dads rifle and blew his brains out.

the news stories all called him a drug dealer.

Yeah, that's possible. Everyone makes mistakes. For all I know writing this could be a mistake. We make more mistakes in one day then we could count in a lifetime. So, they made a big mistake, that just means that it is more easily reconisable. Otherwise, it's still a mistake, and we as human beings cannot help but make mistakes. I mean think about it, it may not even seem like a mistake to us, but to someone of a different culture it could be a huge disgrace. That one big mistake could be minor somewhere else compared to something we think is minor. An example would be language. Americans as a whole do not think of a grammar mistake as a huge error in someone's day, but in other cultures, such as the Spanish culture, miss one word and a child could be in for a beating. If you say something incorrectly you may insult your guest beyond reason. Think about it that way.

Lots and lots of times, but for some reason they are singled out for it, adults make some serious mistakes too and they are the ones that should know better.

I can't give you a number but it happens all the time. We have no clue when we are teens that we are not invincible and our actions will have consequences. That isn't to say that we can't make the most of those experiences and become better people for it.
