Is there a way to connect one laptop to another to copy information over, maybe with some sort of magic USB cable or something? Meeting adjourned.

I am NOT a nerd.
You can't just connect two computers with a USB cable. If the two laptops have a built-in wired networking, then you can connect the two computers with a CROSSOVER Ethernet cable.
(Don't use a regular Ethernet cable.)
Then you use the Windows network wizard on both computers to set up your own peer-to-peer network. You must enable file sharing for your little network.
If both laptops have wireless network cards built-in, you can use the Wireless network wizard to create an Ad-hoc network (i.e. there's no router between the computers).
If one of the computers does not have any network capability built-in, then you can buy a USB to Ethernet device.

If you have IR (infrared) you can send info to another computer sitting across from you with no cable...as for a cable, use cable connection in accessories.

This cable is probably what you're looking for and if not other options are mentioned in the description.
