On Feb 1 I sprained my ankle badly. Didn't go to a doc about it (I could walk, so my dance prof said it was ok) until a month later when it seemed to get even worse (more painful, swelling wasn't going away). Diagnosis? Grade 2-3 sprain of the lateral ankle ligaments and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th metatarsals.

I was put in an aircast pneumatic boot (aka knee-high moon boot) for 6 weeks, from March to the very end of April. X-rays: no fractures. The swelling went down and so did the pain. Went to a chiro and physio for the ankle after, it felt nearly normal.

I am a vocational stream ballet dancer and am physically fit, but now after every class, even after walking long distances, my ankle really aches. The pain is enough to wake me sometimes, or force me to sit at times. Its a deep, dull, ache all around the ankle joint. It is also very easy to sprain and swells readily now... Any ideas on why this is still a problem so many months later? THX.

you might want to try going back to doc for follow up xrays to check for stress fractures or arthritis. you can also try this great website if you are interested in treating yourself, myfootshop.com. it offers articles and products for foot care, there is also a discussion forum with a doc you could post your questions to. try using the source for a direct link to site and good luck!

I thunk like 3-5 weeks I sprained my ankle when I was little so I think that's how long it took. I know it takes longer than a break

I am not a doctor so please, consult a physician if it gets worse.

With that said, I have sprained my ankles on at least 2 dozen occasions. From college football, basketball, jogging, etc. I have learned that some ankle sprains take months to heal if we continue to use them and in your case, could also lead to a stress fracture.

What also happens with repeated sprains is that the tendons and ligaments become loose so to speak and allow more movement of the ankle joint, increasing the potential for future sprains.

I think visiting a sports Dr. should be your next bet. it could also be arthritis.

Good Luck

I second the opinion about sports doctor.

I had a foot injury due to dancing that was not even diagnosed i.e. they didn't figure it out, X-ray showed nothing but it hurt like hell if I steped fully on the front and inner part of the foot (yeah, that's what you always have to do for Latin) and it hurt a lot after every practice. Sports doc examined my dance shoes (the shoes got her approval), my foot structure and gave me a bunch of exersises that sounded stupid but they worked. He said I needed to develop certain muscles that will provide extra support because my ligament is not doing the job. They also did ultrasound treatment to reduce the inflammation.

Go to sports doctor.

It may be arthritis. Best to have a specialist get down to the nitty-gritty. No long-lasting pain anywhere is normal. So, your business is to get to the bottom of where the pain is coming from.
