The greatest common factor is the largest number that can be evenly divided into two numbers in question. It's the largest mutual denominator that will result in integers when comparing two integers:

The greatest common factor of 60 and 84 is 12.

The greatest common factor of 18 and 14 is 2.

The greatest common factor of 9 and 12 is 3.

Greatest common divisor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In mathematics, the greatest common divisor (gcd), sometimes known as the greatest common factor (gcf) or highest common factor (hcf), of two non-zero integers, is the largest positive integer that divides both numbers without remainder. Some authors emphasize that "greatest" is not so much a measure of magnitude as a label for the fact that any other common divisor of two numbers divides their gcd. These authors also do not require the gcd to be positive, so that there are two gcds a and b, with a = -b.

The greatest common divisor of a and b is written as gcd(a, b), or sometimes simply as (a, b). For example, gcd(12, 18) = 6, gcd(−4, 14) = 2 and gcd(5, 0) = 5. Two numbers are called coprime or relatively prime if their greatest common divisor equals 1. For example, 9 and 28 are relatively prime.

The greatest common divisor is useful for reducing vulgar fractions to be in lowest terms.

You've got two numbers for example....4 and 8....the greatest common factor is 4 because you can pull a 4 out of BOTH 4 and 8.

That's just an example...I think it's got to be a WHOLE number.

the greatest common factor is when you have 2 numbers lets say 18 and 24 first list all the factors for each number. (numbers its divisible by)18|1,2,3,6,14,18
24|1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24
now the GCF of those 2 numbers is 6 because that is the highest number they both have as a factor

its the largest number that a set of numbers is divisible by. ex. 4 would be the greatest common factor of 8 and 16 (not 2, because 4 can go into both and is larger than 2). =]

Most common: 1
2nd most common: 2
3rd most common: 3
4th most common: 4
5th most common: 5
Do you see where this is going?

Update: Oh, I thought this question was going in a different direction. Sors.
