Would food coloring kill brine shrimp?

And if they dont kill brine shrimp, would the shrimp that consume the colored water change into that color?

The food coloring shouldn't kill them because they have a very tough exoskeleton that can keep salt out, so it should definetely keep the food coloring molecules out. As far as them turning that color, I don't think so, again because of the exoskeleton. That is the part that would have to be "stained" but, if you do get them to change colors, you should post pictures!

I don't think anyone has done this experiment yet, but I can tell you that toxicity, even of a food color, depends on its concentration (among other things).

So- start out VERY dilute. Make up a dilute solution of the food color (about a spoonful, keep it in a stoppered vial) and add ONE DROP of this to the shrimps' water. Stir it gently. If they do not die, add another drop after 24 hours. Build up slowly. It is likely that they will take up the color.

For a blue color that is known to be a "vital dye," use methylene blue WS. Use it the same way.

Probably would not kill them but I highly doubt it would change their color. Would you change color if you drank food coloring?
