I'm looking for somewhere with decent food shops and local services, somewhere green to walk the dog and good transport connections.

West Bridgford and The Park are the two most sought after areas, but they come at a price.
Most others are alright, but definitely avoid St. Anns and Forest Fields - those are the two areas that give Nottingham the bad press for gun crime.

I used to live in Nottingham, moved to Northern Ireland after for family reasons. Was never really affected by crime in either!
West B/ford has already been mentioned, but between the city & W/Br you have Gedling as worth considering. This will give access to shops, city & places to walk dogs.
Burton Joyce, Mapperley & Lambley are also worth a look. Avoid the areas North & West (M1 side) usually. The East side will give you plenty of access to the forest & open spaces, and good access to the City.

Sadly the city of Nottingham itself is getting a bad name for guns.
By far the best area is West Bridgford . Good shops, transport and areas to walk the dog.
