If you're a beginner, get an introductory book on openings. One that discusses a few different openings, and explains the thinking behind them.
Follow that up with an introductory book on end-games. How much do you need to force a check mate (when almost all the pieces are already captured), and how do you go about it.
And keep playing. With the extra bits of theory that you pick up from books, you'll get to the middle game in better shape, and also get better at spotting winning opportunities.
For the rest, learn by experience. You could delve into absurd detail with more books, but I wouldn't bother - it tends to take the fun out of playing.
As for quick traps and pitfalls, the one thing I keep seeing in beginner's games - with quite some success ! - is the 'scholar's mate': http://www.chesscorner.com/tutorial/basic/scholars/scholars.htm
