Don't crawl into bed and climb under the covers, or you will fall asleep! Read at a desk or somewhere, where you'll be sitting up straight, and drink water, it'll keep you alert.

Standing up.

Also, changing the temperature of the room can help. It can be much harder to fall asleep when the room is too cold.

Try reading during the times of the day you are most alert, and engage yourself in the book by highlighting if it's a textbook, or pausing after every chapter or important event to process it a bit in your mind.

Reading in a public place is also a good way to help make sure you don't fall asleep- if you can concentrate despite the noise around you.

If you really get desperate...don't go to the bathroom. It will be awkward enough to keep you up. It sounds really weird, but it works. Althought for a limited time. :)

I agree that reading something truly exciting will even make you fight drowsiness! I know that Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer were books I couldn't put down even in the wee morning hours simply because I didn't want to stop reading. As opposed to Wuthering Heights, a book that has consistently put me to sleep for years. It started as a joke in high school. Reading wuthering heights = naptime.

Seriously though, reading sitting up is probably better if you want to avoid falling asleep. Also perhaps starting to read earlier on...not waiting until ten or fifteen minutes before you typically fall asleep.

Read something interesting enough that you can't fall asleep even after you put it down!

If it is something tedious, like a textbook, I sit at a table and use a highlighter so I pay attention. You don't have to read every word, but just skim and highlight.

My favorite place to read was my college library because it was always too cold to fall asleep.
