I am renting a new house locally and moving from this apartment and the house smells like someone used to smoke in it. How do I rid the cigarette smell to a FRESH clean smell? Please don't tell me Febreze cause it only lasts for a day....thanks!

Oh yeah, we DONT smoke...this is a house we are about to move into and the walls were just painted as well. I am assuming the smell is in the carpet.

Put out trays of vinegar and ammonia to absorb the smell. Yea, your house will smell like chemicals for a couple of days, but it does absorb the smells. Also, wash all walls, floors and carpeting. If possible keep windows open for a couple of days.

Hmmm it really depends on what you're meaning- Did he smoke in the house a lot for many years? Cigarette smoke can stick around for quite some while... Even after opening all the windows and airing the house out, spraying airfreshners ect... You could try bleaching the walls and ceilings (a bucket of water with a bit of bleach diluted into it) just scrub the walls and ceilings down (you'll probably notice a lot of yellow stains coming off) <---if indeed he was a heavy smoker....Hiring a carpet cleaner (or renting one) will do wonders...Air the house out as often as possible...And buy some airfreshners, candles... ect... Before buying those though, I would go for the DEEP cleaning- Wash all sheets, blankets, rugs, too! And if all else fails- You can always paint!- That is a sure way to get rid of the smell. :) Good luck!

Well keep the windows open as long as you can. Maybe a little cleaner to wash the walls as well. Steam the carpets, Oder's stay in there along time.

If it is mostly in the carpet, rent one of the wet carpet cleaners. Most grocery stores have those for rent.

try baking soda on the carpet. let it set for awhile and vacuum. Then give it two more treatments. That is about as good as its going to get unless they totally remove the ill smelling carpet.
