pros: you get to work with kids if you like that, you have a fixed schedule every day, good hiring prospects, make a difference, fixed salary, fairly independent
cons: if you do badly it is a huge mistake, some kids/parents are mean, very low pay, may have to do prepared curriculum, take your work home with you, underappreciated

Pros:
Knowing you're performing perhaps the most important job in society.
Vacations - summer, winter, spring break, federal holidays
Respect from some in society
Tenure protection
Independence to a certain degree - you control what goes on in the classroom
The kids - seeing them grow and learn is priceless
Cons:
Low pay when compared to other professions with similar required education
Long hours - I often work 11 to 12 hour days - 60+ hour work weeks are the rule not the exception.
You are accountable for things you have no control over - students that perform poorly due to home issues you have no control over yet the teacher is held accountable for their success or failure in school.
Not respected by a large portion of society
Misconceptions of what teachers really do by most of society can get very frustrating - ie. the politics of education
Thousands spent each year out of my own pocket for needed classroom supplies.

The holidays are great. The work load is reasonable and the job is fairly secure. If you can see you're making a difference it can be a wonderful feeling.
The cons are the comparatively low pay, the insults and bad attitude you have to suffer, the often disorganised state of schools, the pompous, self-important and quite often crazy people in authority who think nothing of setting meeting after meeting when you're trying to get on with marking or preparation, and the glib, loudmouthed boring colleagues who make these meetings last much longer than necessary.

Well the big thing to remember (which is a major negative for many types of people) is that a semester, and in fact year is a continuum just like a clerk in a store checking out one person is a continuum. There is a curriculum, which carries through from beginning to end. Even courses where the subject seems sequential or "complete step" oriented has a definite beginning and projected, but conclusive end. It requires great organization and focus.

The pros would include working with young people, but getting a new group every year; being able to put your own personal flair into your work; influencing young people and making a difference in their lives; extended time off at Christmas and Thanksgiving plus a week in the spring to spend with your own family; working with a group of like-minded dedicated teachers; a chance to laugh each and every day; opportunities to use cutting edge technology; and all the coffee you care to drink.
The cons would include: long hours of preparation, grading, and worry; relatively low pay; poor public opinion and perception; disrespectful students and parents; governmental guidelines made by those without educational understanding; 25 minute lunch break; sore feet.

cons:
Parents are either overinvolved or not involved at all.
The pay isn't great, and schools are often underfunded.
Work at home almost as much as work at school
Internal politics can be hell.
State and federal standards force us to teach to tests.
pros:
Summers off and lots of vacations.
Union protection and tenure.
Good bennies make up for the low pay.
There is no greater feeling than when a struggling student succeeds.
