Emo is suppose to mean Emotional music. Who ever though of that names was a fricken idiot, because by any mean music is aways emotional. So as for todays music, I will go with....A band thats self-absorbed, with thier own shitty music who classify them selves as EMO to fit in with a crowd, when really they don't have a damn clue about whats talented and what not. And if your if you disagree with me that everthing is technically EMO than your an obviously my second definition.
Peace

Emo:

In its original incarnation, the term emo was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s Washington, DC scene and its associated bands. In later years, the term emocore short for emotional hardcore, was also used to describe the DC scene and some of the regional scenes that spawned from it. The term emo was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and strongly emotional during performances. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and, slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s. Despite being primarily Thrash Metal, the group Metallica has been labeled by some of the music industry to reflect emo styles in their latest works, especially St. Anger.

Starting in the mid-1990s, the term began to reflect the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock style of emo, more melodic and less chaotic in nature than its predecessor. The so-called indie emo scene survived until the late 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted to mainstream styles.

As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker emo within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under todays emo is even more vast, leaving the term as more of a loose identifier than as a specific genre of music.

basically if you think of "grunge" as a lot of angst filled rage asking the question "WHY ME!?!", Emo is no longer angry, just resigned and whining about it.

an emo kid is someone who listens to punk music...the emo style (ie belle and sebastian, the get up kids, the starlight mints, bright eyes, dashboard confessional...) and you can choose to live the "lifestyle" when i was an emo kid i had jet black hair and wore black alot and skateboarded....no matter how much punk rock kids way they aren't conformist, they conform to each other and all dress about the same, and have similar hairstyles. also while being an emo kid i chose to live as a straight edge as well. what a straight edge is, is someone who doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs or have sex...common symbols to recognize these people are sXe or x...x (like my sn xsandybreezerx) which is also a way of life of a punk rock kid or emo kid. also if you choose to live life as an emo kid then be prepared to hear "o go cry in the corner emo kid" and stereo types about being a cutter. neither of those are true. emo is a genre of music that originated from austin texas and a bar called Emo's...thus this genre is called emo, it falls under punk/indie/alt music. so really it means your a punk rock kid...like a sub-genre or sub-culture.

There are two popular forms of dress that are considered emo. The first is essentially derived from the 1990s "indie emo" scene, and has connections to indie rock and punk rock. It includes more vintage and thrift store clothing, typically for a well-worn look. Some of the clothing leans toward khaki colors. T-shirts are typically of smaller sizes, and with various prints, often images from the 1980s. Bags and backpacks often have pins and patches of various bands.

The other popular style of dress focuses on darker colors. Commonly seen styles include straight, dark colored hair, either black, red, multi-colored (brown and black, red and purple, etc.) which covers one eye, males wearing pants tailored for females, lip, eyebrow, and labret piercings, and dark make-up on males and females (most notably black eyeliner, although red eyeshadow is becoming increasingly popular). A common accessory for both males and females is glasses with a dark coloured (usually black), thick rim, a style sometimes even worn by persons who do not require corrective eye-wear. Wristbands in various colors are also popular.

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

::sniff sniff:: "The Demise of the Siberian Traintracks of Our Rusty Forgotten Unblemished Love" sounds like it would make a great emo band name. ::cry::
