I'd like to get away with a smaller v8 to conserve gas, but still have get up and go. I'm not necissarily looking for a real popular model, it just has to be 2 door. Thx

What about the Dodge Duster?

Although better known for their muscle engines, the Plymouth Barracuda ('65-'74) and the Dodge Challenger ('70-'74) also came with small V8s. Although the "Slant 6" engine was standard, most came with the 273cid V8 in the early Barracuda or the 318cid in later additions of both cars. All were two-door cars.

Depending on your taste and creativity, you can make most any car(even one that isn't thought of as cool or a muscle car) into something special.
My uncle and I had a Ford Pinto that we put a 302 in. The Pinto was built as a sub-compact that offered speed, handling and economy. Infact they recalled them because of the lack of emphasis on safety. The gas tank tends to explode when hit in the rear. But we fit the front suspension and drivetrain of a Mustang Capri into it, tubbed out the rear and put 32 inch wide slicks on the back and topped it off with a convertible top assembly under the hood to make the hood raise from the back with the push of a button.
A lot of work for a car we split the purchase of with $150 each, but we sure got a lot of praise when we took it out on the street.
