I think both cities should be fine in the first week of Jan, but do bear in mind that the winter would be wicked. I've never been to Helsinki before, but maybe you can search the internet for ski resorts or cruises to go to in Finland or Sweden.

I went to Stockholm last year in May, it was absolutely beautiful. I'd imagine if you come in January you'd spend a your daytimes in and out of museums, doing short walks around the city, and enjoying the tranquil winter view of the marina over a warm cup of coffee; then evenings back at your hotel in the sauna, or downtown enjoying jazz or dancing somewhere at a club (anybody fancy tango or salsa?). Otherwise, you might like to check for things to do in the rural area--I still remembered the 40-minute bus ride from a Stockholm airport (can't remember its name but it wasn't the major one), as far as your eyes see are the green rural pastures of the Swedish farmlands--absolutely breathtaking.

If you want to enjoy the Scandinavian winter, go for it. I suggest getting in touch with the hotel you plan to stay at and ask them for tips.

Sure. But rememeber it's like the coldest week of the year. But I reallty think you should go. There's ferries going between those two cities if you want to visit both and don't mind the middle of the baltic sea in January.
