I was given a police number to call and they gave me a report number to give to my insurance company. They wont accept that alone and say I need a letter confirming that I reported the loss. As I am now back in britain I dont know how to contact the person I spoke to on the phone. I would be most grateful if someone could help me out.

I think that easiest thing would be for you to contact the hotel where you stayed. They will have the number of the local authorities. If not try a web search under yahoo or ask.com. If it was in the US I would try superpages.com for the main number. I am not sure about in other countries. The hotel should be able to help you.

Directory Assistance in America is 1 (area code) 555-1212. The police would be from the city or the county that you stayed in. Was the hotel (assuming it was a hotel) in the city limits or outside the city limits - hence in the county.

Actually, that's not true in all locals/ states. Downtown Los Angeles could be Los Angeles County.

I used to be a directory assistance operator. If you e-mail to me the address and the city and state, I will look up the numbers for you on the Internet or at the local library - as I have nothing better to do and would enjoy doing it.
