Is it possible to toe the company line at work, show up on time daily for years,and get absolutely nowhere?

I've done everything I've been told to do at the corporation I work for, and have got essentially nowhere..and we are talking 10 years
running.....now I don't want to here people say, just leave. My point is, you really don't get anywhere at any place by toeing the line.
Only suckers do that. It took me 10 years to learn that!
Showing up on time means NOTHING!
Doing what they tell you means NOTHING!
But the people who cheated, lied, and screwed everyone over
got promotions up the YINYANG!
The boss' kids never show up for work half the time, and they
are running the company.
They smoke pot on the job, and have sex in the computer room, and I am stuck slaving for this place with token 3% raises
to keep me quiet!
People, when will you learn, you have to screw people over to get ahead. Never forget that!

It's a brave new world.
You're damn right, toeing the line gets you no where fast. Most companies now don't expect you to work there more than 2-3 years. Companies generally now don't do much promoting from within, although they'll tell you otherwise.

Keep in mind, a company can't (generally) un-promote you. If they promote you and it doesn't work out, they have to fire you, creating problems (now 2 job holes instead of 1). And if they give you a big promotion and a raise, now everyone else is going to want one, and be bitter that they didn't get it. Yet if they hire someone new with a large salary, no one notices (or at least no one will know what their salary is). Plus companies get lost of new blood this way, new ideas, skills, and perspectives learned elsewhere. So that's the only time that companies whip out the check book is when they hire someone new. Thus, it encourages you to be that "new guy" and find another company. It sucks and there's no loyalty anymore both in employees or on the part of the companies, but its the sad way our wonderful economy and couples having to do two incomes to survive.

My advice is don't believe any promisses. Assume the worst. Only believe what a company puts on paper when you're hired. Anything verbal means absolutely nothing, like a used car salesman.

But the stuff going on at your company is particularly and unusually horrible. Is there an HR department? Have you talked to anyone about these severe issues? You obviously hate it there. Don't make yourself miserable any longer, I would start looking immediately. Get your resume out to as many places as you can, and go on as many interviews as you can.

But the person above me is right. Don't compromise who you are to get ahead. People who do this are soulless, empty beings, who once they can't work any more will have no purpose in this world. Remember no one ever dies wishing they had spendt more hours at work.

I won't disagree with you that most of the time the greatest morons get promoted because with the moron gene they also got the blamer one as well as the kiss ***. And then you have the nepotism.

That being said, you told us that you toe the line....which is great...but it's just enough. People who tend to get promoted in a company are the ones that go over and beyond. Show exceptional qualities. Make the company more money or give them a greater value. Do I discount the fact that you may have been screwed over...not at all.....but instead of wallowing in the "woe as me" mind set, perhaps showing the world that you can get promoted without being a moron or a kiss a$$ is something that you can accomplish.

I personally, am a manager of a multi-billion dollar corporation. Could I be further along if I stabbed people in the back and butt kissed.....YES, beyond a shadow of a doubt....but would I be able to look at myself in the morning. No.

Seriously though, do you really believe all that crap youre spouting? Maybe you didnt get all the promotions but i'll bet you have no guilty conscience either. I'll bet you can look everyone in the eyes knowing you didn't stab them in the back. And I bet you can sleep easily at night too knowing you didn't lie, steal or cheat anyone. Don't put those attributes down. The only things you own cleanly and unencumbered in this life are your name and reputation and don't give them short shrift. When someone needs a person they can trust for what ever purpose, your name will always be on the short list. That's a hell of an accomplishment in my book.

Toeing the line will not get you ahead and who ever told you that was stupid. If you want to get ahead you have to go for the extra mile. Lots of people out there are like robots coming on time doing as they are told but it is the ones that show intuitive that get anywhere in this life. No one will give you a "Job well done" or a "Way to go" if you are doing as you are asked. That is your job that is why they hired you. If you want to get anywhere then you must make things happened don't just sit on your duff watching all the other guys performance affect you as in the end they will be found out what slackers they are. So if you want to get ahead then go for it go beyond what you are told to do.

I do agree with you tho, u have to be super confident and good at talking crap to be taken seriously even if your work ethics are appalling!
