The Ring (the Japanese original). Brilliant movie in so many ways, and probably the most terrifying things I've seen -- I don't have any use for hack and slash bloodfests either. I stayed up very late to watch it one Hallowe'en, then absolutely had to go to bed directly after since it was something like 3:30 am. That was three years ago and part of my brain is still convinced that that woman lives under my bed.

My favorite is the original, black and white "Little Shop of Horrers" and the simialarly themed "Bucket of Blood."
Delightful little films, beginning with pretty horriffic ideas, but treated with a loving, humorous twist.
Together, I doubt these two films last more than three hours, but both you and your friend may enjoy them.
I don't know if they can even be rented, but I often see them in the sales and clearece bins at Amazon dot com and Barns and Noble dot com. I got both of mine for under $5 each.

Prince of Darkness gave me the creeps. Gotta watch it at night, real late. 28 Days is different, plus it has an appearance by Doctor #9.
