If you have a section of wall of fence at the bottom try part Glaszing it with Garden Mirrors, put lots of Plants like Acers around the place, and if poss make a small raised area with plants by raising you give a felling of height to the garden.

"Less is More". Before you start sweating over your lack of space, make the best out of what you've got. It's a fact that your back yard is small, and for some, that might be just what they're looking for. Think about single working people, senior citizens and people that just don't use their backyards. What ever you have there, keep it to the minimum. If you have walls, or a solid fence around it, give it a fresh coat of a light-color paint. That is gonna make the space look clean, neutral and wide. If you have pots, leave only a few of them, maybe the biggest ones on the far corners of the yard, and other mid-sized ones around, keep in mind the opening statement, more is less, if you have many things in the yard, that is gonna make the space look cluttered. Give a finishing touch with a set of bistro chairs and table. I am sure that if you're selling your place with the help of a real state agency, they should know what to say to entice buyers, but if you're doing it yourself, make sure you state the size of the back yard clearly, including a phrase that attract buyers, such as "free maintenance back yard"

hi,

Perhaps if you state that the garden is small but a pleasant well
well maintained area .Any potential viewers to your property will be informed of this before they visit. Especially if they have children or like keeping koi carp. This takes the hassle of both you and them. And any potential visitors are fully aware.Of the property before they decide to view, (although you may get the odd ones!)

You are also being honest to yourself and them. Thus allowing you to enjoy your garden while you still reside in your home. They
may also feel they are purchasing exactly what they require.

Even in a cynical house buying market they may appreciate the realism of what is there when they do view and improve or change things to ther own individual tastes, or even keep some of your influence on the garden etc, hay !they may like what you've done,

Should they decide to purchase at least they have been informed.

You can relax instead of troubling yourself over what is not there. Add colour if you wish some people love gardening some people don't its not top of there list.

I'm sorry i have no feng shui or kwick fix solution for you.

A friend in Houston had an architect draw up a plan for a side garden which was only 10ft by 30ft.....he put up a 10foot fence on the street side with a couple of hexagonal cut outs for windows and an old iron 8 Ft. gate on the front side of the garden. There is just a small seating area next to the garage and back door which ties into the walkway made of pavers up the front of the 30 ft. walkway to the iron gate. He planted Carolina jasmine (yellow and climbs) to climb the fence using chicken wire to train it...then he had one bed on either side of the walkway which has gorgeous plants . It really made the area look bigger than it actually was....tell us what size you are working with and maybe we can all come up with some ideas for you.

Put really big plants close to house and smaller and smaller ones further and further down the garden. Add mirrors on the fences all round and put little model people and cars and stuff right down the end of the garden. Lock your back door so people viewing can only look from house and paint a Mureil at bottom of garden to make it look longer.

Any help (I think I may need some).

Employ a good garden designer, like me!
You need to divert the eye, by making diagonal paths, one or two, depending on the length of garden. At each intersection make a feature (like an arch, or a seat). It works best if you can't see the next section; therefore making the space look bigger. Put in trees, to add height and make another dimension to the space. (Silver Birch - Betula - don't take up much space, but lend a certain elegance.)
Maybe at the end - make an arch with a mirror in it, to make the space look bigger - but don't forget to place the mirror at an angle, so that you can't see yourself coming!.

Use variegated foliaged plants near the boundaries, they confuse the eye and make it more difficult to focus on the boundary. Avoid bright colours as these draw the eye. A mirror fixed to the boundary wall or fence and framed with trellis and soft climbers, will give the appearance of another 'room' to the garden.
